What is a corporate umbrella?

An corporate umbrella is a large financial institution that has several subsidiary companies, in this case, health insurers. These insurers often have their own customer service and operate completely independently, but do not carry the risk of the insurance. They are also often steered by the umbrella corporation. Some corporate umbrellas also offer health insurance.

Which are the four largest health insurers?

People often talk about ‘the four major health insurers’. These are Zilveren Kruis (Achmea), VGZ, CZ and Menzis. More than 80% of Dutch insurances policies are with one of these four major health insurers or one of their subsidiary companies. For example OHRA (from CZ) or FBTO (from Achmea).
