European health insurance card (EHIC)

The European Health Insurance Card is a free card that gives you access to medically necessary health care in most European countries and Australia. The card entitles you to health care under the same conditions and at the same cost (free in some countries) as people insured in that country.

How does the EHIC work?

The EHIC entitles you to medically necessary care when you travel or have a holiday abroad. Without this card you may have to pay the bill yourself first. It’s not compulsory to carry this card on you. But if you end up in hospital unexpectedly, this can lead to a lot of paperwork. This can be avoided by showing your EHIC card. The bills will then be sent directly to your health insurer in the Netherlands.

How do you apply for an EHIC?

The EHIC is a free addition to the health insurance card you received from your insurer. The EHIC is usually added to the back of the regular health insurance card. Contact your health insurer if your card doesn't have this. Cards are issued by your health insurer. Contact them via their website or by phone.
