Health insurance in the Netherlands: the restitutie insurance

If you make a comparison on our website, you will directly see the terms ‘restitutie’ and ‘natura’. These are difficult terms and it is not directly clear what it means. That is why we are happy to inform you a bit more about the different types and what the pros and cons are.

What is a restitutie insurance?

A restitutie insurance is a type of a basic healthcare insurance. If you choose a restitution insurance you can go to whichever care provider you want. For example every hospital of psychotherapist. In the Netherlands, we call this ‘free choice of health care’. You need to send the bill you receive from the care provider to your health insurer. Or you need to pay it yourself and claim it afterwards. The healthcare insurer will always pay the costs if it is covered by your health insurance.

Pros of a restitutie insurance

An advantage of a restitutie insurance is that you are always free to choose to which care provider you want to go. You do not have to think about anything when you go to a hospital or clinic. In general, all medical costs will be reimbursed.

Cons of a restitutie insurance

A disadvantage of a restitutie insurance is that you will pay a higher monthly premium than when you choose a natura insurance. In our comparison we state if the health insurance includes ‘free choice of health care’ or not. When there is a checkmark, you are always free to choose to which care provider you want to go.
