The results above are based on a non-electric Volkswagen Polo 1.2 from January 2015. The driver is 50 years old and lives in Hilversum. They have 5 years of no-claim and drive about 12.000 kilometers in a year.

The premiums above are meant as an example and illustration only. The monthly premium for a car insurance differs for everyone, so if you make a comparison, chances are you will see different results.

What do you need to apply for a Dutch car insurance?

In order to apply for a car insurance in the Netherlands, you need the following:

  • a valid European Union driving license;
  • a Dutch license plate for your car;
  • residence in the Netherlands.

If you have prior driving experiences, you can also provide your new insurance with a document stating the damages you have been a part of in the past 5 years, assuming the foreign insurance company has provided you with one. The Dutch insurance needs this document to correctly estimate your no-claim years and provide the discount, if applicable.

Insuring your car: 4 easy steps

Step 1

Compare insurances

We need some information, such as your license plate, your address, and your no-claim. With these we can calculate the monthly premium for your situation.

Step 2

Apply for car insurance

Made your choice? We need a little more information to make sure your application is acceptable for the insurance company. We'll ask some additional questions to be sure.

Step 3

We process your application

Everything in order? If you are happy, so are we. We forward your application to the insurance company of your choice. They will do a last check, before sending you the policy.

Step 4

Cancel your old insurance

If needed

If you changed insurances, you have to cancel your old insurance yourself. This will not happen automatically. Is your car brand new (to you)? Then there is nothing to cancel.

What insurance companies do we compare?

A car insurance is tailor-made and therefore different for everyone. There is not one "best" insurance company; this is, for each situation, different based on premium, your car, and the policy conditions. That is why we at Independer don't only compare based on monthly costs, but also take reviews and the way damages are handled into account. Even though there are many offers, we know how to find the right one for everyone!

The following insurance companies have provided us with insights into their systems and can therefore be part of the equations and comparions:

How to apply for a Dutch car insurance

It is easy to apply for a Dutch car insurance. However, one must take care to answer all questions completely and truthfully. If you don't, the factual premium might be different from the initial calculation. Or, worst case scenario, the insurance company could decline your application, or a later claim.

When applying for a car insurance, make sure you have the following information ready:

  • the license plate of the car you want to insure;
  • your zip code and house number;
  • your date of birth
  • the no-claim years registered to your name, if any;
  • an estimation of your mileage; the amount if kilometers you drive in a year.

By filling in this information, we can make a equation and compare insurances, to find the best one for you and your situation.

Tip: comparing car insurances is not only by price. Check the deduction ('eigen risico', difference in coverage, and the policy documents as well.

If you have made your choice, you can immediately apply for the insurance. Keep in mind that you have to answer some additional questions, in regards to past damages you may have been part of, if you ever had an insurance be cancelled on you, and so on.

After providing us with some last details, such as your bank account number for the monthly deduction, you are all set for a new car insurance. Are you swtiching? Don't forget to cancel your old insurance. This does not happen automatically.

Car insurance and coverage: WA, WA+ or allrisk?

If you own a car, you are required by law to insure it. This means that you, at minimum, must take out a WA-coverage. WA stands for Wettelijke Aansprakelijkheid, loosely translated as legal liability.

It is possible, but not required, to take out a better insurance. In the Netherlands, there's three types of car insurances:

WA-coverage

Legal third party liability

Covers all damages you cause to a third party. Cheapest option, but the most limited as well.

Recommended for cars aged 10+ years

Beperkt casco (WA+)

Limited coverage to your own car

Covers all damages you cause to a third party, all damages to your windows, as well as damage to your own car if caused by:

  • Fire, explosions, or lightning strikes
  • Storm or otherwise nature-related causes
  • Theft and damage dealt by burglary
  • Collisions with animals

Volledig casco

Better known as allrisk

Covers all damages you cause to a third party, all damages to your windows, as well as damage to your own car if caused by:

  • Fire, explosions, or lightning strikes
  • Storm or otherwise nature-related causes
  • Theft and damage dealt by burglary
  • Collisions with animals
  • Vandalism
  • your own fault

Additional coverages on your car insurance

After choosing your coverage (WA, WA+ or allrisk), you will be offered some additional insurances. These are optional, but usually recommended. Of course, this will raise your monthly premium, usually by about € 3 to € 6 per additional insurance. These add-ons are usually only to be taken out in combination with a car insurance, although is some cases, you may be able to apply for a seperate one.

These are the most common add-ons when it comes to car insurances.

Schadeverzekering voor inzittenden

Passenger insurance

The schadeverzekering voor inzittenden (SVI) is a coverage for everything and everyone in the car at the moment of an accident, including the driver. It disburses after an accident, regardless of who caused it. Physical damages, monetary damage (like losing income for not being able to work), and material damage (such as a laptop that doesn't survive the crash) are all covered.

Autorechtsbijstand

Legal aid

Autorechtsbijstand is legal aid for every dispute when it is somehow related to your car. Everything surrounding the sale, for example, but also if you and another driver have a disagreement about responsibility. If this comes to court, the autorechtsbijstand will pay (most of) the expenses.

You can get a seperate rechtsbijstand. This is a little more expensive, but covers more situations.

No-claimbeschermer

No-claim discount protector

The no-claimbeschermer protects the discount you get based on your no-claim years. Once each year, you can claim one damage, and keep the same discount you have. Keep in mind that you do lose no-claim years, even though you will not notice a difference. As soon as you switch to another company, you will find that the premium will rise significantly.

Pechhulp

Roadside assistance

A car insurance covers damage from outside: the weather, a crash, vandalism... However, damage from within is not covered. Roadside assistance comes to your aid if you have a technical breakdown, a flat tire, or anything related to the car that comes from the car itself.

Why compare car insurances?

A car insurance is required by law if you own a car in the Netherlands. That doesn't mean you have to pay a small fortune every month. The trick is to find a good, but also relatively cheap car insurance.

Once you take out an insurance, the price is set for a year. However, in general, prices change regularly. Comparing different car insurances every now and then - at least once a year! - might save you a lot of money; maybe a different insurance company is now cheaper than your current one. By making equations and comparisons, chances are you have the best car insurance at any given moment.

Why Independer?

Making a comparison for car insurances is not hard, but it takes a lot of time if you have to do everything manually. Independer does the hard part for you and finds all the information you need. You can sort the results based on price, reviews, or plicies. That way, you know that you make the best choice.

Free additional insurances through Independer

If you insure your car through Independer, we'll throw in a free add-on. The kind of add-on depends on the insurance you take, but either way, you have more insurance for the same price as that you would pay with the insurance company itself.

Free theft insurance

with WA-coverage

If you choose the WA-coverage, you usually have no coverage for theft of your car. That is why Independer offers the free theft insurance. It doesn't matter with what company you take out the car insurance - as long as you insure it through Independer.

Only three other conditions appy:

  • A maximum estimated current value of € 7.500 when you apply for the insurance. Is your car worth more than that, you get the physical therapy-coverage.
  • The car is stolen in it's entirety. If parts of the car are stolen, like the radio or airbag, you really need the WA+ coverage.
  • The car is insured through Independer and that exact insurance is still active.

Free physical therapy-coverage

With WA+ or allrisk coverage

After an accident, you may have some extra costs you did not take into account. Medical costs for physical therapy is common, but another good example is the deductible from the health insurance. The free physical therapy-coverage takes care of these unexpected expenses. Some terms and condition:

  • Your car insurance is through Independer and still active during the accident.
  • You are WA+ or allrisk covered, or WA with a car that is worth more than € 7.500.
  • The costs are medical and related to the accident; crutches and the like are covered.
  • Only the driver is insured, but this doesn't have to be the person whose name the insurance is on.

Tips to keep the premium low

  1. Compare insurances regularly, at least once a year. Prices go up or down, and your own situation changes as well. Perhaps there's a different insurance company that fits your needs - and your wallet - better than your current one.
  2. The fancier the car, the more expensive the insurance. If you want to keep the premium low, choose a smaller, lightweight car.
  3. Pay smaller damages out of pocket. Insurance might cover it, but you will lose no-claim years and therefore pay way more premium for quite some time. Just a small dent or scratch? Pay for it yourself and consider it an investment.
  4. Pay a year up front. Yes, that is a lot of money, but some insurance companies offer a discount if you pay the whole year in advance. If you happen to sell your car in that year, you will be reimbursed.
  5. Be critical when it comes to coverage. Is the car brand new, then allrisk makes perfect sense. But if your car is 10 years old, you might want to consider a basic WA-coverage.
  6. Consider taking a higher "eigen risico", or deductible. Some companies offer a discount if you do that.
  7. Prevent yourself paying twice. For example, do you have legal aid somewhere else? Don't add it to your car insurance.
